Advanced Placement English Language and Composition

Advanced Placement Literature

 

     These courses will be scheduled in the spring and are for those students wishing to prepare for the Literature or  English Language and Composition Advanced Placement exams administered in the spring.  Special Note:  Students successfully completing either of these courses will be prepared for, and are strongly encouraged to sit for, the Advanced Placement Exam.  The exams are offered by the College Board organization for a fee and will be administered to our students in May.  Passing scores on the exam can result in college credit.  This course will meet the twelfth grade English requirement and students choosing it do not have to take Senior Critical Analysis and Composition. 

 

 

READING MATERIAL:

Anna Karenina- Leo Tolstoy * In 19th century Russia, a women's actions were scrutinized. Anna, miserable in her loveless marriage, gives in to her desires Vronsky, and suffers the consequences.
Persuasion- Jane Austen * Anne Elliot's family persuaded her to forget about her first love.  She is then alone for several years until this man returns.  The power of her family's persuasion is strong and Anne learns to find her own strength of persuasion
Sound and Sense- Laurence Perrin* collection of poetic works.
Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man- James Joyce* In this fictionalized memoir, readers are introduced tp  Joyce's alter ego, Stephen Daedelus, the hero of Ulysses.
"Twelfth Night"- William Shakespeare *This classic play is a celebration of romantic love and a traditional romantic comedy.  However, like many of Shakespeare's works, the subplot involves a character whose deeds must be thwarted.

John McPhee Reader * collection of works by the author
