Course: Introduction to Woodworking/ Advanced Woodworking

Outcomes: 

Students will have an introductory experience in woodworking.  This is a “hands on” class with an emphasis on safety in the workplace.  Students will learn the proper use of hand and power tools.  The emphasis on all tools will be the safety issues and their proper use in the woodworking environment.  Students will create their own wooden projects created with power and hand tools being used in cabinetmaking.  Students will discover that safety is a key element when working in a woodshop setting, and that “horse play” does not have any place in a woodworking setting.  Safety will be a major part of the student’s grade in woodworking, the students must understand that safety and proper conduct is essential in any woodworking shop.  Advanced students will be expected to help the introductory students and help control the safety of the woodshop.  They will plan, design and construct more advanced projects than the introductory students.  The expectations of the advanced student are at a higher level than the introductory student.  For example, the advanced student’s projects will be graded at a higher standard than the introductory students.

 

Instructional Outcomes-

Course Content:

The course will cover the following topics:

·        Safety in the workplace

·        Problem solving

·        Sanding

·        Staining and finishing

·        Power tools

·        Hand tools

·        Woodshop terminology

·        Gluing

·        Basic woodworking techniques

·        Collins Writing Format

 

Course Activities:

1.      Students will be required to receive a 100% on all tool tests before they will be allowed to use them.  The students first test grade will be recorded for their grade.

2.      Students will be required to complete and study homework assignments

3.      Quizzes will be given periodically throughout the course

4.      Each student will be required to complete assignments to receive credit

5.      Each student will be required to complete projects for credit

6.      The John Collins five types of writing will be used during the entire course.

7.      There will be various types of assignments given throughout the course

8.      Each student will be required to keep a portfolio of all work, notes, and quizzes.

 

Special Requirements:

1.      Students will bring to class each day: pencil, pen, and any other material needed to participate in class.

2.      Students are required to pay a $25 lab fee to pay for materials used during the semester.   This lab fee will cover any predetermined projects required in the class.   Any student who wishes to construct a larger project will be required to pay an additional fee to acquire those materials for the project.

3.      Late Policies:

a)      No homework will be accepted more than one day late.

b)      Projects will lose five points for each day late.  No projects will be accepted more than five days late.

c)      Missed class time should be made up within two days of an excused absence in order to receive full credit.  Because a large portion of the grade is based on lab assignments, it is strongly recommended that all missed classes be made up.

d)      Tests and quizzes must be made up as follows:

1.      one day absent, two days to make up

2.      More than one day absent, special arrangements must be made with the teacher.

 

Technology:

 

            Students will be required to use technology in this course.  Students will be required to complete all written homework and class work using a word processor.  There will be many projects and lab activities that will require the use of power and hand tools in the woodworking lab.  A short research assignment will be assigned to research the history or terminology of woodworking.

 

SAFETY:

 

            Safety will be the main emphasis in this class.  Students are expected to act appropriately and to use all the tools correctly.   Any student that is observed or found doing anything that is unsafe or inappropriate in the shop will be required to have a safety sheet signed by their parents.  Safety in the shop is everyone’s number one priority.

 

Method of Evaluation:

            1. Homework                                                   100 points

            2. Quizzes/ John Collins writing             100 points

            3. Tests/ John Collins writing                             100-200 points

            4. Participation/Attendance                               10 points daily

            5. Lab-work                                                     100-500 points

            6. Final Examination                                          100-500 points (20% of grade)

            7. Portfolio (Advanced Students)                   300 points (End of the semester)

 

Passing grade for the class is a 65.

**Teacher may change point values on any assignment with prior notification
