The Sanborn Regional School
District uses the Telian-Cas Learning Concepts
program. This
program is a phonemic awareness system that teaches students the letter
sounds through stories, pictures, motions, and unique names.
Students can make the sounds when they recognize the unique pictures.
By the end of the year Kindergarteners are able to blend 2, 3, or 4
letter words as well as being able to recognize these words in books by
using this unique program.

The Kindergarten bases its
math program primarily on the
Everyday Math
curriculum. We also like to incorporate other programs into our
day which includes:
Scott-Foresman and
Touch Math, and other teacher made activities. We
pride ourselves on integrating hands-on activities, games, and projects
into our daily instruction. Concepts that are covered include
number recognition, 1 to 1 correspondence, addition, subtraction, money,
greater than, less than, and sequencing events. |

We base much of our formal
literacy instruction around literacy centers. Students are broken
up into small groups where they are working with the teacher or
individually on an age appropriate activity. The teacher bases her
group instruction on activities and concepts that come directly from our
reading series- Houghton Mifflin. We work on pre-reading skills
that include recognizing the title page, author, left to right
progression, and word recognition. While students are working
individually they work on other pre reading activities including picture
dictionaries. |

Memorial's Kindergarten
program is based on 2 key components- academics and social growth.
Kindergarten is the perfect spot for children to recognize how to work
with partners, with a group, share, take turns, and to be an active
member of a community. Within our district we base many of our
community building activities on the
Responsive Classroom
model. We foster these skills through play driven
activities, morning meeting, setting a classroom contract, and other
classroom activities. Within our schedule we have a built in
"choice time" where students choose a group activity like blocks,
kitchen, puzzles, drawing, painting, the sand table, dress up, or puppet
show. During this time children can work together with friends,
solve problems, and make strong connections with their classmates.
By the end of the year students can work together in a group, share with
friends, and have formed a strong classroom community through this play
centered time.

Once a week students will be taking home
their own book to share with their family. During school students
will work with a group and the teacher to select a book that is
appropriate for each individual ability. The teacher will read
with each student before taking the book home in order to insure that
the students will be successful in their reading. Miss Anderson
will read with each child on Monday and that will be when students will
take their books home. Books need to be returned on Friday so that
books can be checked back into the class library. After reading the book
with your child feel free to complete some of the following activities:
Who is your favorite character?
Where does the book take place?
What happened in the story?
When does the story take place
(time of day, time of year)?
Why do the events take place in
the story?
Is this story real or
make-believe? How do you know?
On a separate sheet of paper draw
a picture of your favorite part in the book.
